Wally Smith Playground at Nancy Hill Elementary School
The West High Class of ’68 teams with the Fox Valley Park District, District 129 and the A+ Foundation to create Nancy Hill playground in honor of classmate Wally Smith.
The dream – to build Wally Smith Playground
Is there a better way to honor our peers and to provide for the needs of our children than to install a much-needed playground at Hill School?
The need for a playground
The original Nancy Hill School was demolished in 2016 and replaced in 2017. It provides a totally modern facility for the kindergarten-through fifth grade classes of that neighborhood. While there is a small playground for the youngest, there is no playground for the older kids. There’s no other playground in the vicinity, either
Many of you know Wally. Wally was a student at Nancy Hill. He was active in every dimension then. After Wally earned his degree, he returned to Nancy Hill School where he began his teaching career.
What makes Wally special?
Wally always had the needs of others in mind. He was ready, willing and able to help no matter what the time of day or night. Wally could be counted on to always do the right thing. He was there for adults and children.
We want to convey his spirit and values memory into future generations. What better way to honor, commemorate and inspire with a legacy that reflects his values.
Our target is to raise $25,000 to complement the funds that the park district and the school district can allocate. We want to raise this by the end of September 2018, so we can meet the cycle for budgeting and construction planning. We could have dedication in the summer of 2019.
