The West Aurora Community Field of Dreams Fund was created to provide financial assistance for the purchase and installation of artificial field turf in the West Aurora High School stadium, which includes the Ken Zimmerman Field.
This project is being undertaken by West Aurora School District 129 to increase safety on the playing field and to expand the availability of teaching space at the high school.
Research has shown that artificial turf is safer than or as safe as natural grass. It is used by most NFL teams, major colleges and more than 1,000 high schools.
Installation of the turf at West Aurora would, in effect, upgrade a classroom, opening up Ken Zimmerman Field for marching band practices, now overcrowded gym classes and multiple athletic team practices and contests.
The surface can be used repeatedly without deterioration. This will save the district from the expense to water, fertilize and mow the field.
Finally, the facility will be open for community use, which will generate revenue from usage fees.
According to Neal Ormond, president of the district’s school board, “We are excited about the opportunity to add to our instructional space for School District 129, as well as provide an enhanced resource for community use.”
